From a Mum-and-Daughter Project to a Purposeful Brand: The GinGingers Journey

GinGingers began with a mum, her red-headed little girl, and a moment in time when the world felt upside down. What started as a simple, hands-on project between a mother and her daughter during Covid unexpectedly grew into a brand rooted in honesty, curiosity and old-school simplicity.

Behind GinGingers is someone who cares deeply about what we put on our skin, how products are made, and the people and communities behind each ingredient. This is her story - and the heart behind the brand.

What inspired you to start your brand?

Honestly, GinGingers wasn’t supposed to be a brand at all. It started as a little Covid project to keep my then 4-year-old daughter entertained. Like so many parents at that time, I found myself paying much more attention to what we were putting in our bodies and on our bodies. When I began looking closely at children’s products, I quickly realised I didn’t actually understand what many of the ingredients were - and I’d always just trusted big brands because of who they were.

I had already exhausted every craft idea under the sun trying to keep my daughter busy, and with the added challenge of not seeing my parents regularly, I needed a distraction too. So I went back to basics - the simple, old-school remedies my family has used for generations - and I started experimenting with ways to turn them into something honest and effective.

What began as a fun pastime with my red-headed little girl, my original “GinGinger,” slowly and unexpectedly became GinGingers.

What does “purity” or “clean” mean to you personally?

For me, “pure” and “clean” are really simple: transparency, honesty and trust.

It means using what nature already gives us without overcomplicating things - no unnecessary synthetics or fillers, no confusing ingredient names. I love products where you can flip the tube over and instantly understand what you’re looking at and why it’s there.

Clean, to me, is natural simplicity. Fewer question marks. More peace of mind. Something you genuinely feel good about using on your skin and in your home.

What makes your products unique or special?

GinGingers isn’t a marketing concept - it’s a real-life product born from a real need. Our gel is made in Yorkshire using local and sustainable ingredients wherever possible, supporting farmers and small producers along the way.

We use cold-process methods - partly because I wanted my daughter to be able to safely help when we first began, and partly because I later learned how much this protects the integrity of the ingredients while reducing energy use. Our hero ingredient is authentic apple cider vinegar with the Mother - that cloudy, living goodness full of friendly bacteria and organic acids that do the real work. We pair it with botanicals like tea tree so they can work together.

The gel is COSMOS certified through the Soil Association, certified cruelty free and vegan friendly. It’s independently lab-tested against acne-causing bacteria, fungal microbes and scalp microbes linked to dandruff and odour - so it’s not just a nice idea, it genuinely performs.

We also made a conscious choice to keep that initial vinegar “hit.” The tea tree softens it a little, but I don’t want to hide the star of the show. If ACV is the main ingredient, you should be able to tell - that’s part of the honesty.

The gel is truly multi-purpose - for breakouts, scalps, hardworking feet and more - one tube that genuinely earns its place in your bathroom. And it’s already been recognised with a Silver Innovation Award at the Free From Skincare Awards.

No fluff, no theatrics - just one hard-working tube that does its job.

What is the mission or deeper purpose behind what you create?

At the core of GinGingers is a simple mission: to raise awareness, champion natural ingredients and do the right thing - for people and for the planet.

I want to cut through all the noise and overwhelm of skincare and offer something that works without confusion or false promises. Education plays a big part in that - helping people understand what they’re putting on their skin and why, and showing that simple, well-chosen ingredients can be incredibly effective.

GinGingers is also proof that a small, independent Yorkshire brand can do things properly - thoughtful formulations, proper testing, honesty, and deep relationships with local growers and makers. “Made in Yorkshire” isn’t just a statement; it represents quality, integrity and real people behind the product.

Above all, I want GinGingers to be a brand people genuinely trust - no fuss, no gimmicks, just straightforward skincare that respects their skin, their values and the planet.

How do you approach sustainability or conscious production?

For me, sustainability means trying to do the right thing at every step - and being honest about what we’re doing and where we can improve.

Here’s what that looks like for GinGingers:

Knowing our ingredients and suppliers

I want to know the people behind what we use - their story, their practices and their values. Real relationships matter.

Keeping things local where possible

Our apple cider vinegar and our manufacturing are both based in Yorkshire. Fewer miles, fewer unknowns, more connection.

Cold-process production

Using cold methods reduces energy consumption and keeps delicate botanicals closer to their natural state.

Less, but better

A multi-purpose gel naturally means fewer bottles, fewer products and less waste. I’d rather create one brilliant product than a shelf full of half-used ones.

Thoughtful packaging

Our tube uses 50% PCR plastic and is fully recyclable. We avoid unnecessary packaging - simple, functional, and purposeful.

It’s not about claiming perfection - it’s about being thoughtful, asking questions and constantly finding ways to be a little kinder to the planet while still delivering a product that genuinely works.

What do you hope people feel or experience when they use your products?

Above anything, I want people to feel they can trust it.

I want GinGingers to feel honest, hard-working and straight-talking - a product that simply gets on with the job. I know it won’t be for everyone; it’s a bit of a Marmite product. You can absolutely tell there’s real apple cider vinegar in there, and I’m perfectly okay with that. I’d rather be upfront.

But beyond the scent or the texture, I hope people feel they’ve found a brand they can rely on - consistent, honest and always trying to do the right thing.

If someone uses GinGingers and feels a sense of relief, like “Finally, something that actually works with my skin and fits my life” - then that’s exactly why I do this.
